Reality TV show analysis


One reality show that is popular is Love Island. Love Island is a competition-based show that involves a group of contestants that are stranded on an island and to win they must “couple up” with another islander, whilst being constantly on surveillance. The public vote on the best couple and the person left single is eliminate. The winning couple wins £50,000. The show has a target audience of working class 16-24 year olds. This show is popular because it involves falling in love and lots of drama, all of which the public can get involved with and the young audience can relate to the relationship troubles of the islanders and empathize with them.
Gogglebox is another popular reality TV show, that appears to have a very broad target audience as people from all classes around the ages of 14-60. A diverse group of families, friends and couples are filmed around the UK watching TV, the show broadcasts their candid reactions to new shows and films, old shows and films and the news and because of this the show attracts a large audience. The show is often funny without meaning to be as we get a glimpse into friends and family conversations and drama that ensues in a “normal” household. Audience members can relate and feel apart of the different groups as they cry and laugh over TV. For example, when the groups are watching the New and share their opinion, the audience at home may start debating as to whether or not they agree with them.
I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here is a popular TV show, enjoyed by working class people around the ages 18-30. The show involves a bunch of celebrities living in a jungle, who must compete in disgusting and difficult challenges to win and be crowned “King” or “Queen of the jungle.” The show seems to be popular as the audience get entertainment out of watching the celebrities suffer. Audience members may feel sympathetic towards the celebrities and punish those they don’t like by voting for them to do the challenges. The show may also gain a large audience as we get to see a different side to celebrities and their true personalities revealed as they are cut off from the outside world and live off rations until they win or are voted off.
